Sage Advice from Photographer Kristin Mitchell (Scotland)

Peeling through a short article on JPGMag. I chanced on photographer Kristin Mitchell and her article on photography.

She provided 10 sage tips which I believe is gold in photography and I wanted to concentrate on the 2 which she posed.

BE A COPYCAT

Learn from other photographers and their styles. Draw inspiration from previous bodies of works and different styles.

I think this is brilliant.

DON'T BE THE SAME

I guess what Kristin is trying to say is that while it's OK to draw inspiration from others, putting your own spin is always the best. I think that's one of the reasons that make photography such an interesting line of work, hobby or obsession. There are so many permutations of how you can present your ideas and streams of consciousness.

Images matter.

If you place your own personal imprematur on your work and your own flair -- voila!

I think I posted a photo of C1 beside a babyphoto of her mom. This one of Kristin isn't quite like it but you get the idea.

Love the work of Kristin.

Had a chance to ask Kristin what are her inspirations and ideas generators?

Kristin Mitchell mentions -- all sorts of places, really. Mostly photography books. Gregory Crewdson is one of my all-time favourites, I also love the Woodpecker series by Jeff Bark.

Sometimes I look at photos that are awarded prizes or given attention in competitions and things, and try and glean something from them.

But also, films, old movies and things like that.
